Invisalign Australia Survey Reveals:
Teeth top the list of facial features most would like to improve!

29 June, 2011. SYDNEY, Australia.

Exclusive research conducted on behalf of Invisalign Australia, pioneers of the invisible-orthodontics market, has revealed that 99% of Australians aged between 18-39 believe having a nice smile is very important, with more than one in five saying it's actually essential.

Given that around three quarters of 18-39 year olds say that they notice someone's teeth the first time they flash their smile, it's no wonder that teeth top the list of facial features that 18-39 year olds would most like to improve - ahead of skin concerns and nose.

So what makes a nice smile? According to 71% of Australians, it goes hand in hand with straight teeth. In fact, it appears that straight teeth in a smile actually have many positive characteristics. 54% believe straight teeth are linked to a person's overall attractiveness and around half say straight teeth even reflect how much pride you take in your appearance. So it's not surprising that there is almost universal agreement (91%) that when your teeth look good, you feel more confident.

Dr Suzy Green of The Positive Psychology Institute says that these findings from Invisalign support previous scientific research. "This Invisalign survey has proved that having great teeth we are happy to show through a beautiful smile has huge psychological benefits to our overall wellbeing, particularly when it comes to confidence. There is a phenomenon called 'the halo effect' which means we judge people on one characteristic such as bad teeth. Whilst we may think that making judgements of others based on physical appearance is superficial, we often do it unconsciously. The survey proves that people actually do notice each other's teeth and are making judgements about their overall attractiveness and personal pride based on their teeth alone."

"In a world where social media encourages people to show their lives in pictures, it's concerning to hear that 80% of Australian women feel self-conscious about their smile when they see a photo of themselves and only 18% of Australians are really happy with their teeth. Wouldn't it be nice if we all felt confident to smile more?" she added.
